Madera County is a county of the U.S. state of California, located in the Central Valley north of Fresno County. As of the 2000 census the Morgage Calculator population was 123,109. The county seat is Madera. Madera in Spanish means timber or lumber. The county derives its name from the town of Madera, named when the California Lumber Real Estate Home Values Company built a log flume to carry lumber to the railroad there in 1876. Out of the total population, 28.60% of those under the age of 18 and 9.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
